Section 1: General Questions

play button What is our current Learning Management System (LMS)? And what are its technology requirements?
Collin College is currently using Blackboard Learn 9.1 SP14 to support classroom teaching in addition to online, blended and hybrid courses. Minimum technology requirements required for Blackboard: Current Blackboard compatible Browsers.

play button I need help and the eLC is closed. Who can help me?
eLC is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. For after hours support please contact 972-548-6555 option 5. Also be sure to browse the eLC faculty help area. The eLC Faculty Resources are accessed in CougarWeb. Log into Cougarweb, go to the Faculty tab and then click on the eLC link.

Section 2: Access to Blackboard


play button I do not see all my courses in Blackboard. What do I do?

If you do not see your courses in CougarWeb or Blackboard, send an email to webservices@collin.edu with the course CRN. The eLC cannot give you access to your course.

CRN is your Course Record Number. It is a 5-digit number assigned to your course.

You can get the course CRN from your department office OR
  • Go to http://www.collin.edu
  • Go to Academics and click on Schedule
  • Click on e-Schedule. Search by Term and Submit. Enter your search criteria
  • You will find the CRN in the search results

play button What is the direct login to Blackboard?
The direct website for Collin College’s Blackboard is http://elearning.collin.edu
Username - CougarWeb username. Your username is the first part of your @collin.edu email.
Password - Usually it is the last six digits of your CWID. You can locate this in CougarWeb on your paystub (listed as Banner ID). If you have not yet received a paycheck, call the employee help desk at 972-548-6555, option 5.

play button My classes have started and I noticed that one (or more) students are not in Blackboard? What should I do?
The eLC cannot assist you with this problem. You can email webservices@collin.edu with the course CRN, name of student(s) and student’s ID number(s).

Section 3: Beginning of the Semester


play button What are the steps to copy my old course to a new one?

You can work directly with your colleague. You will export your course (see helpsheet above) and email the exported .zip file to your colleague. Your colleague will then need to import the .zip file into their Blackboard.

play button I need a template for an online course I am going to teach. Where can I find it?
Please email elc@collin.edu and specify:
  • The course you need access to e.g. English 1301 or ENGL 1301; either format will work
  • If you will be teaching the course online, blended, hybrid or on-campus
  • The semester you will use it for

One of the Instructional Designers will email with the template and the next steps to take.

We encourage you to also attend one of our Rookie Workshops. The Rookie Workshops provide a hands-on introduction to using Blackboard. We will discuss how to access Blackboard, add various types of content, use assessments and tests, and discuss Gradebook in Blackboard.

Once you have set up your account, refer to the Using the Grade Center: The Basics Blackboard section (see helpsheet below).

play button Where are the papers my students have submitted through Blackboard?
You will first want to check to see if the column is hidden in Grade Center:
  • Go to Full Grade Center
  • Click on Manage and select Column Organization
  • Look for the column that may be hidden

    help/note button If the columns are grayed out, that means they are hidden.

  • Find the column you want to un-hide and check the box to its left
  • At the bottom of the screen, you will see Show/hide; click Show Selected Column. Then Submit

Some faculty at Collin College use Respondus StudyMate software to create other kinds of assessments such as flash cards, crosswords and quizzes that integrate in to Blackboard. Please contact the eLC for more information.

Each year the Respondus/StudyMate License keys for Collin College users expire at the end of July and need to be reinstalled. You can find the updated keys in CougarWeb on the My Workplace tab in the Academic Software Center Channel.

Section 9: Synchronous Conferencing Tool- Zoom


play button I have heard about Zoom, what is it?
Zoom is software that is available to Collin College faculty and staff. It can be used for Web, audio & video conferencing.
  • Online meeting
  • Group messaging
  • Screen sharing

It can be used on Windows, Mac, iOS (iphone/ipad) & Android (phone/tablet).

You do NOT need an account to participate in a Zoom session.


play button How can I get an account?
If you want to schedule a Zoom meeting, you need an account. You will need to email HelpDesk (helpdesk@collin.edu) and ask for the specific version of Zoom that best suits your needs.
  1. Zoom Basic: For 1-on-1 interaction like online office hours and individual feedback sessions.
  2. Zoom Pro: For multi-user interaction (up to 25 participants), including class sessions. You will need to provide an academic rationale for the multi-user Pro account, else you will be given a Zoom Basic account.
  3. Large Meeting Support: A one-time session based meeting for up to 100 participants. You will need to provide an academic rationale for Large Meeting Support, else you will be given a Zoom Basic account.

play button What instructions do I need to give my students/meeting attendees of a Zoom meeting I set up?
You can choose to send these instructions to meeting attendees including students when you use Zoom. You will want to send the link to the Zoom room and the Zoom phone number and associated meeting ID from your Zoom account.

Zoom Meeting Attendees/Students: You do NOT need an account to participate in a Zoom session. Click on the Zoom link sent to you. You will be prompted to download the Zoom application (only needed once per device).
If you are joining Zoom on your mobile device, you may be prompted to download an application.

Prior to the Zoom session:
  • You need a speaker or headphones to hear the conversation
  • You may need a microphone if you want to talk.
  • You can use a non-toll free Zoom number and meeting ID to hear and talk in the meeting.

Start of the Zoom session:
  • Click on the Zoom link sent to you
  • You will be prompted to download the Zoom application (only needed once per device).
  • If you are joining Zoom on your mobile device, you may be prompted to download an application.
